Innovators in Action: Year 8 Triumph at the IET Faraday Challenge!
On Thursday we took six Year 8 students to the University of Portsmouth for the IET Faraday Challenge Day. This is a STEM competition that is run nationally where students complete a hands-on problem-solving and critical thinking activity. We were up against six other local schools who were briefed by UKRI to develop a prototype to help with how we use batteries in everyday life. The students had to design and build a prototype that is capable of using batteries and that could help someone with a disability. Our students built a device made for partially sighted people that used pressure pads, hydraulics and a buzzer to tell them how much they've filled up their glass/cup. The judges commented on how well our students worked as a team and how innovative the idea was - so much so that we won! We are now placed into a league table with the other regional winners and if we qualify, then we will be invited to the national final at the end of the school year.
