On Wednesday, students journeyed to Brighton and Hove to visit two Jewish Synagogues, as part of their religious education studies. Thirty-five Year 9 students got the opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Judaism, firsthand, and speak to the Jewish community of Brighton about their religion and beliefs.

Firstly, students visited Middle Street Synagogue, a beautiful historic building located opposite Brighton Beach. Here, students were tasked to explore the site and were allowed to ask any questions about Jewish life. No question or subject was considered taboo and our guides at the Synagogue answered openly on honestly about their experiences, debunked rumours and myths about the Jewish people; as well as tackled the subjects of stereotypes and prejudices.

Next, our students visited the Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue. Guided by Roger, a local volunteer and Synagogue member, students got to learn about how a reformed Synagogue differs from an orthodox one - from the types of services and events that take place, to their different beliefs, practices and Jewish traditions held there.

The trip was a brilliant enrichment opportunity for Crookhorn students and a great way from them to engage and experience different cultures and religions, as part of their R.E studies.

Year 9 student, Will said: "I had a good time on our Synagogue trip, it was nice to engage with the people and to learn about their religion. Not only that but I got to ask questions and get their personal answers."
